Teaching Style & values
The approach to supporting learning in my classroom is diverse, reflective and adaptive to each new group of students I have the honour of teaching. For me, the underlying approach for effective teaching and classroom management is best understood through the lens of relationship.
Relationship with students
A class that values relationship allows the proper space and atmosphere for learning to occur. Without relationships, no learning is possible.
Relationship between teacher and student begins with attentiveness to the student themselves. Who are they? What do they value? How does their school, home and cultural experience shape and influence them? The first priority for me as a relational educator is to remain attentive to my students so that I can help develop educational opportunities that support their unique goals and abilities.
Classroom relationships are built on mutual respect and consideration. I believe that students deserve respect from their teachers that recognizes the challenge that school can pose. I believe that students must learn to offer this respect to their peers and to reciprocate respect to their teacher through consistent modelling. A respectful environment is necessary for a classroom to be safe, caring and compassionate.
Relationships should be a reflection of the whole classroom. All members of the classroom community have a role in creating a positive classroom culture that validates emotions, challenges, communication and responsibility. Through class meetings, discussion and collaboratively designed class rules all students have invest in helping our community thrive.

relationship with curriculum
A teacher that cultivates a deep relationship with curriculum, and who can creatively invite students into this same relationship, will have an active, inspired and engaged classroom. Engagement is supported through diverse instructional approaches, imaginative lesson design and through vibrant cross-disciplinary projects that value the integration of arts-based learning.
Teachers are tasked with creating meaningful ways for students to each find their own unique path to learning. In order to meet this responsibility of individualized learning, a teacher must be invested in the the curriculum and have a flexible, knowledgable and comprehensive understanding of how to uncover the curriculum using many teaching approaches and strategies.
I believe strongly in explorative educational approaches such as inquiry and project based learning that support student autonomy and competency building. Engaging students in authentic exploration of concepts and the practical application of learning inspires student motivation and fosters an imaginative curiousity for learning.
According to age and ability, teachers should intentionally support student capacity for self-directed learning through validating their voice in assessment practices, assignment design and collaborative instructional approaches.

Relationship in community
Student learning, attitudes and cultures are not created in a vacuum. Supportive relationships are as unique as each student yet they each play a significant role in supporting student success.
A holistic community approach invites parents into an ongoing, meaningful relationship with their child’s learning, teachers and the entire school community. Teachers and parents who work together have an exponentially greater ability to influence positive student behaviour, effort and success. I believe that teachers have a responsibility to invite collaboration with parents in ways that support classroom and individual student learning.
Educational relationships extend to teaching colleagues who, through shared praxis, collaboratively develop engaging instructional design and relationship building with students throughout the whole school. An individual teacher should not feel the full responsibility to meet the educational needs of each individual student. There is a comprehensive team of educators, administration and support staff that bring unique perspectives, skills and abilities to a school community. Fostering professional relationships is crucial to the success of an educator, and subsequently, to benefit the learning goals of each student.
